Sri Lankan Socialist Equality Party to hold May Day meeting in Colombo

The Socialist Equality Party (SEP) in Sri Lanka is holding a public meeting in Colombo to mark May Day. International working class unity today is a matter of immediate practical necessity. Speakers will address the need for a socialist solution to the looming dangers of war and deepening social inequality.

May Day takes place this year amid ominous signs that the US administration is preparing another criminal military adventure against Iran, following on from its subjugation of Afghanistan and Iraq. Planning has already taken place in the Pentagon and the White House for full-scale strikes on Iran, including the possible use of nuclear weapons.

Throughout South Asia, the working class is facing growing attacks on democratic rights and living standards. The political and economic crisis takes a particularly acute form in Sri Lanka where working people face the renewal of bloody civil war. Peace talks in Geneva are on the brink of collapse as violence escalates in the war zones of the North and East of the island.

The international working class is the only social force capable of preventing the descent into barbarism. The crucial issue is the development of a socialist perspective and program to unify and guide its struggles. We warmly invite WSWS readers, workers, young people and intellectuals to attend our meeting to discuss these vital questions.
