WSWS : News & Analysis : North America ISSE/SEP meetings on the fourth anniversary of the invasion of IraqIraq, Iran and the eruption of American militarism8 March 2007Use this version to print | Send this link by email | Email the author The International Students for Social Equality (ISSE) and the Socialist Equality Party (SEP) will hold a series of public meetings across the US this month, marking the fourth anniversary of the invasion of Iraq. The meetings will culminate in the ISSE/SEP Emergency Conference Against War, to be held on March 31 and April 1 at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Meetings will be held in Virginia, Delaware, New York, Illinois, Michigan and other states. The theme of the meetings will be the causes and consequences of the eruption of American militarism, including the invasion of Iraq, the threats of war against Iran, and the growing danger of a wider global conflict. March 20, 2003 is a day that will be remembered with shame and outrage by the population of the United States and the entire world. On that day, the American government, with the complicity of the entire political establishment and media, launched a war based on outright lies, the central aim of which was to plunder the natural resources of the Middle East. The American ruling elite initiated this occupation in order to seize control of Iraqs oil resources as part of its strategy of global hegemony. Since that day, hundreds of thousands of Iraqis, and over 3,400 US and coalition soldiers, have been killed. In the November 2006 elections, the American people expressed their deep-felt opposition to the war in Iraq. The Bush administration has responded by escalating US military violence in Iraq and ratcheting up its threats and provocations against Iran. The Democratic Party, which gained control of Congress as a result of the antiwar vote, is continuing its complicity in the war by refusing to use its control of Congress to end it. The ISSE and the SEP are calling for the development of an international movement of students and the working class as a whole against the Iraq war and the threat of its extension into Iran. Such a struggle can be conducted only in opposition to both the Democrats and the Republicans and the profit system they uphold, which is the cause of imperialist war. Further meetings will be announced in the coming weeks. To register for or find out more about the ISSE/SEP Emergency Conference Against War, click here.
