The world crisis and the 2008 elections: a socialist perspective

The Socialist Equality Party and World Socialist Web Site are holding a meeting on May 31 in New York City on the world crisis and the 2008 elections.

The 2008 election campaign is unfolding in the shadow of the deepest crisis of world capitalism since the Great Depression of the 1930s and in the midst of the continuing US wars of aggression in both Iraq and Afghanistan. The presidential primary contest has pushed the Democratic candidates, Clinton and Obama, steadily to the right.

With millions facing the loss of their jobs and homes and the destruction of their living standards, none of the candidates are proposing any policies to protect working people from the deepening financial debacle. The Democratic Party offers no alternative to the program of war, social reaction and attacks on democratic rights carried out by the Bush-Cheney administration over the past seven years.

The eruption of an insoluble financial crisis in the center of world imperialism has opened up a new political era in which the working class must secure its future and that of mankind as a whole through the struggle for an international socialist program.

This meeting will examine the underlying causes of the present crisis and elaborate an international socialist response.
