مورخان بسیاری متفق القول بر این باورند که قرن بیستم به مثابۀ دوره ای مجزا در سیاست و فرهنگ، در ماه اگوست سال 1914 با وقوع جنگ جهانی اول آغاز شد. اما این پرسش که چه زمانی این قرن به پایان رسید - یا آیا اصلاً به پایان رسید- موضوع اختلافات شدیدی است. اختلاف تنها بر سر پایان دوره ای صد ساله نیست. واضح است که قرن بیستم پایان یافته و ما در قرن بیست و یکم زندگی می کنیم و در میانۀ دهۀ دوم قرن جدید قرار داریم. اما هنوز، جهان ما در میدان گرانشی قرن بیستم باقی مانده است. اگر مورخان هنوز با خشم به قرن گذشته نظر می افکنند، از این روست که بشر همچنان در نبردهای نامعلومی درحوزه های سیاست، اقتصاد، فلسفه، و حتی هنر درگیر است.
