The Socialist Equality Party and World Socialist Web Site are calling a May Day meeting to be held on May 4 in Detroit, Michigan.

May Day has been celebrated historically to express the international unity of the working class. This year, May Day comes amidst growing social and political turmoil throughout the world. The credit crisis that has engulfed Wall Street marks a major turning point in world politics. The US economy stands at the brink of an economic breakdown on a scale not seen since the Great Depression.

The American ruling class will respond to this crisis by a sustained attack on the jobs and social programs of the working class internationally. At the same time, the population of the world confronts the continued occupation of Iraq, the threat of war against Iran, and the extreme heightening of international tensions.

As the US elections drag on, it is becoming clear to millions of workers that none of the candidates of either party represents the interests of the working class or offers an alternative to the polices of militarism and social reaction.

Fundamentally, the population of the world confronts a failure of world capitalism. The alternative to capitalism is socialism, and workers must fight to reappropriate the great historical traditions of the American and international working class.
