Nick BeamsNick Beams

Nick Beams, the Socialist Equality Party (Australia) national secretary, will speak at regional conferences in the US on "The World Economic Crisis, the Failure of Capitalism, and the Case for Socialism."

The conferences are sponsored by the World Socialist Web Site, the Socialist Equality Party and the International Students for Social Equality. They will be held in Ann Arbor, Michigan (April 25); New York (May 3); and Los Angeles, California (May 10).

Beams is a leading expert in Marxist political economy. He is the author of numerous articles and lectures on capitalism and the world economic crisis, most recently "The crash of 2008 and its revolutionary implications" and "The world economic crisis: a Marxist analysis". He has also written extensively on historical issues, including the First World War and the Great Depression (See "World War I: The breakdown of capitalism" and "The 1920s—the road to depression and fascism").

These regional conferences are being held amidst the greatest world economic crisis since the Great Depression. They will review the historical origins of the present crisis and discuss the necessary program and perspective for a new socialist movement of the American and international working class.

Other speakers include David North, SEP (US) national chairman; Joseph Kishore, SEP (US) national secretary; Barry Grey, WSWS US national editor; Jerry White, SEP 2008 presidential candidate; and Bill Van Auken, SEP 2008 vice presidential candidate.
