Red Star Over Russia
A Visual History of the Soviet Union from 1917 to the Death of Stalin
15 September 2009
Mehring Books is pleased to make available to readers of the World Socialist Web Site the new book by British photojournalist David King, Red Star Over Russia.
In this remarkable book, King presents over 550 photographs, posters and works of art illustrating the history of the Soviet Union from 1917 through 1953. Much of the material covering the October Revolution, Civil War and Great Terror is published for the first time. The accompanying text provides a clear historical background needed to understand the graphic material.
The color reproductions of the revolutionary posters are beautifully done, but the most striking pages are devoted to photographs of the victims of the three Moscow show trials from 1936-1938. King pays special attention to many other photographs that were either falsified or suppressed by the Stalinist censors. This book is a major contribution to understanding these most seminal events of the twentieth century.
