SEP Victorian election meeting

The Socialist Equality Party candidate for the seat of Broadmeadows, Peter Byrne, will address a public meeting this Sunday at 2.30 p.m. Byrne will present the socialist program necessary for the working class to fight the assault taking place on living standards, jobs and democratic rights, the threat of environmental disaster and the growing danger of militarism and war.

All the parties of the political establishment—Labor, Liberal and the Greens—defend the capitalist profit system and agree that the working class must pay for its economic breakdown.

Working class communities in areas such as Broadmeadows already suffer devastating rates of unemployment, poverty and social distress. Behind the backs of the population, Australian governments at both the federal and state level are now preparing to obey the orders of the corporate elite and unleash a new round of cutbacks to public spending and social services. Regardless of which party or combination of parties forms the next Victorian government, it will preside over unprecedented austerity measures similar to those being carried out in Europe and the United States.

At the same time, the Victorian election is taking place amidst rapidly rising great power rivalries. The visit to Melbourne this week by US Secretary State Hillary Clinton was aimed at ensuring that the Australian government maintains its strategic alliance with the US as Washington prepares for confrontation and potential war with China over dominance in the Asia-Pacific.

The working class requires a new socialist and internationalist perspective to defend its fundamental interests. The SEP meeting will discuss the need for a conscious political break with the Labor Party and its various accomplices, including the Greens, the trade unions, and various pseudo-left, middle class organisations, and their nationalist, pro-capitalist program, and the development of an independent political movement aimed at the complete reorganisation of society to meet the needs of the majority, not the profits of the wealthy few. We urge all WSWS readers and SEP supporters in Victoria to attend.
