David North to speak on Leon Trotsky at historians meeting in Mainz, Germany

On September 27 David North, the chairman of the International Editorial Board of the World Socialist Web Site, will speak at a public meeting entitled In Defence of Leon Trotsky during the 49th Historians Conference in Mainz. The biennial Historians Conference is generally acknowledged as the largest and most renowned gathering of historical specialists in Europe.

Professor Mario Kessler of the Centre for Contemporary History in Potsdam will also speak at the meeting.

North will discuss his defence of Trotsky against biographies of the great Russian Marxist published by Ian Thatcher, Geoffrey Swain, and Robert Service, whose attacks on Trotsky made gross errors of fact or violated basic norms of historical scholarship.

Professor Kessler is one of the signatories of the Historians’ Letter, which supported North’s criticisms of the biography of Trotsky by Robert Service and advised Suhrkamp Publishers to reconsider its decision to publish a German edition of Service's book.
