On Wednesday, May 21, hundreds of retired city workers attended meetings at Detroit’s Cobo Hall where the union-affiliated Committee of Retirees insisted they accept deep cuts in pensions and health care benefits.

The so-called Plan of Adjustment, presented by the city’s Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr targets more than 23,000 retired workers for cuts in pensions and related benefits of 30 percent or more, as well as ending healthcare benefits. The “vote” on the deal is a farce. Even if workers vote against it, the bankruptcy judge retains the right to impose even deeper concessions onto them.

The World Socialist Web Site spoke with workers at the event, who denounced the vote as a fraud.
