Hundreds of Detroit teachers shut down the school system in a “sick out” protest Wednesday against decaying buildings, overcrowded classrooms and years of pay and benefit cuts. Rank-and-file teachers organized the action in defiance of threatened court injunctions and the opposition of national and local union leaders.
