SEP meeting in Detroit Saturday to oppose GM layoffs

The Socialist Equality Party and World Socialist Web Site Autoworker Newsletter call on all workers to attend a public meeting Saturday, February 11 at Wayne State University in Detroit to oppose impending layoffs at the General Motors Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant.

Some 1,300 jobs are set to be axed in early March when GM eliminates the second shift. Many of the workers affected are temporary workers who have no recall rights and are not eligible for Supplemental Unemployment Benefits (SUB). The layoffs are planned just before hundreds of workers would reach their one-year anniversary, which would qualify them for transfer rights.

The layoffs will have a devastating impact on Detroit, a city already suffering from an official unemployment rate close to 10 percent and a child poverty rate of over 59 percent.

This meeting has been called to organize opposition and discuss a political strategy to oppose all layoffs.

Meeting details are as follows:

No to GM layoffs! Defend the right to a job!
