The world situation is shifting rapidly. The ruling class is on the offensive, imposing austerity measures and pay cuts throughout the world. At the same time, there are growing signs of working class resistance—from the mass general strike in Spain, to the shutdown of garment factories in Cambodia, to the struggles of US autoworkers in Indianapolis. In every country, there is a sense of impending social explosion.

There are growing signs of a looming currency war, as the major powers strive to defend their national interests at the expense of their rivals, employing measures reminiscent of the 1930s. The Obama administration is expanding its bloody offensive in Afghanistan and what amounts now to another war in neighboring Pakistan. Where will be the next spark that sets off a global conflict?

The development of the capitalist crisis places increased financial demands on the World Socialist Web Site. There is, quite simply, much more that has to be done—we must travel to different areas of the world to cover class battles and give meetings on the socialist program, purchase new equipment to sustain and expand the WSWS’ infrastructure, and hire more staff writers, to cite just a few examples.

All of this requires resources. We do not have corporate sponsors or run advertisements. We rely on donations from readers to sustain the WSWS, and we need your support.

We are launching today a new monthly fund, initially set at $20,000. The aim of the fund is to lay the foundation for the continued expansion of the WSWS.

The development of the WSWS is not an option, but an absolute necessity. As the ruling class goes on the offensive, it is able to bring to bear immense resources—the product of the labor of the poor and exploited. The corporations and banks buy off politicians and media pundits alike.

If the working class is to fight back—and it will fight back—it needs a voice. Workers need a publication that speaks for their interests, that works to coordinate their struggles and gives them the knowledge, perspective and leadership required to carry these struggles forward.
