Agriculture equipment maker John Deere is demanding a two-year contract extension for 10,000 UAW members in Iowa, Illinois and Kansas.
The cuts include 115 workers at Harvester Works in East Moline, IL, on August 29; 71 at the Waterloo, IA, Foundry on September 19; and 52 at the Seeding and Cylinder facility in Moline, IL, on September 26.
Deere is once again placing the burden of declining sales on workers by slashing jobs.
The layoffs can and must be stopped through the independent intervention of Deere workers by forming rank-and-file committees across state lines and internationally to unite workers against the cuts.
The John Deere Workers Rank-and-File Committee is leading the fight against the company and UAW’s attempt to impose new pro-corporate concessions.
To learn more about joining a committee, fill out this form, and someone from the WSWS Autoworker Newsletter or Socialist Equality Party will follow up with you to discuss getting involved.
The repeated and overwhelming rejection of the UAW’s attempted sellouts by a powerful contingent of industrial workers is the latest manifestation of an upsurge of working-class militancy, which is assuming the form of an insurgency against the UAW and other AFL-CIO affiliated unions.
“The aim of this global initiative is to develop a genuine broad-based movement of the international working class, and to encourage workers in all countries to break out of the prison-like shackles in which they are confined by the existing state-controlled and antidemocratic unions, staffed by right-wing pro-capitalist executives.” – DAVID NORTH
