In preparation for yet another major American military action, the fifth in less than a decade, the media bombards the public with empty phrases—such as “weapons of mass destruction”—which explain nothing about the historical background of the US-Iraqi conflict or the social interests that determine US foreign policy. And yet, without any serious public examination of the motives of the government, the Bush administration is about to launch a war that will implicate the American people in the killing of countless thousands of Iraqis and whose long-term consequences could well prove to be catastrophic for the entire world.
