Socialist Equality Party candidate for US Congress in Michigan’s 12th District, Jerome White, will be speaking at a public meeting in Ferndale, Michigan on Thursday, July 13. White will address the war in Iraq as well as the Bush administration’s attacks on democratic rights and the crisis in the auto industry.
White is running for US Congress against incumbent Democrat Sander Levin, a millionaire who is typical of what now passes for an American liberal. Levin has close ties to both the auto industry and the corrupt leadership of the United Auto Workers union. While General Motors, Chrysler and Ford are carrying out massive job cuts, a small article in the July 3 Detroit News reported that UAW President Ron Gettlefinger has joined the board of directors of DaimlerChrysler—an indication of the close connection between this bureaucracy and the auto bosses.
The US unemployment rate presently stands at 4.6 percent; however the figures are deliberately skewed by the fact that those who give up looking for work are not included in this figure. Michigan has one of the highest unemployment rates in the country, at 5.8 percent, due in large part to the massive job cuts in the auto industry. White’s campaign will address this and other vital issues facing workers and young people in this Midwest state.
The campaign to place Jerome White on the ballot is nearing its completion. His supporters have collected nearly 4,600 signatures to place him on the November ballot. While the state requirement is 3,000, the campaign is aiming to make a final push to collect a total of 5,000 signatures to secure his place on the ballot against any challenges.
