Socialist Equality Party to hold election meetings in southern California and Maine

The Socialist Equality Party will hold election campaign meetings in southern California on Thursday, July 13 and Monday, July 17, and in Bangor, Maine on July 13.

SEP candidates in the two states—John Burton, who is running for US Congress in the 29th Congressional District of California, and Eric DesMarais, the SEP candidate for state Senate in Maine’s 32nd District—will speak on their campaigns and the perspective of the SEP.

Thursday’s meeting in South Pasadena, California will also be addressed by David North, national secretary of the SEP and chairman of the editorial board of the World Socialist Web Site.

The July 17 meeting in southern California will be held in Altadena.

In California, supporters and members of the SEP have gathered over 5,000 signatures to place Burton on the ballot. In the four weeks left to gather signatures on nominating petitions, the campaign aims to obtain an additional 5,000 signatures of registered voters, to exceed the required total of 8,442. The deadline for submitting signatures is August 11.

Burton’s campaign has received substantial support. However, it confronts enormous obstacles as a result of the highly anti-democratic ballot access requirements. The SEP appeals to all readers of the WSWS in the area to attend the public meetings and participate in the campaign, to ensure that we are able to meet the requirements imposed by the state of California.

In Maine, SEP candidate DesMarais has already submitted signatures and has won ballot status for his state Senate campaign. In addition to DesMarais, Carl Cooley will speak at the Bangor meeting. In 2004, Cooley was the SEP candidate for US Congress in Maine’s 2nd Congressional District.
