The World Economic Crisis and Imperialist Aggression

Sri Lanka: SEP/WSWS to hold a public meeting in Jaffna

The Socialist Equality Party and the World Socialist Web Site have called a public meeting in Jaffna, the capital of northern Sri Lanka, on “The World Economic Crisis and Imperialist Aggression”.

The global economy faces its most serious crisis since the Great Depression of the 1930s. The recession is affecting every corner of the world, from the advanced countries of America, Europe and Japan through to China, India and Sri Lanka. The attempts of each major power to resolve the crisis at the expense of its rivals has intensified inter-imperialist conflicts.

The US, having lost its global economic domination, is using its superior military power to seek to offset its economic decline—waging wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan. South Asia has become a battleground in the struggle for influence. Sri Lanka is a focal point in these inter-imperialist rivalries because of its strategic location.

Despite the claims of President Mahinda Rajapakse’s government that the global economic crisis is not affecting Sri Lanka, nearly 200,000 jobs have been lost in the first three months of this year alone. Since its military victory over the separatist Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), the government has launched an “economic war” on the working people.

The SEP/WSWS meeting will discuss an international socialist solution for the economic crisis, presenting an alternative political perspective for the Sri Lankan and Asian working class. We invite workers, youths, intellectuals and other oppressed people, including the fishermen of the Jaffna Peninsula, to take part in this important discussion.

Venue: Navalar Cultural Hall, Nallur, Jaffna

Time: 2 pm, Saturday July 18
