Mehring Books publishes The Struggle against Imperialism and For Workers’ Power in Iran

Mehring Books is pleased to announce the publication of The Struggle against Imperialism and For Workers’ Power in Iran: A reply to a proponent of “Iranian Islamic Socialism.” It addresses pivotal issues of socialist strategy in a country that for decades has been a target of US imperialist intrigue and aggression, and where the working class, as heralded by the protests that opened 2018, is now striving to find the road of independent class struggle.

The Struggle against Imperialism and For Workers’ Power in Iran was written in answer to Iranian journalist Ramin Mazaheri, who has accused the World Socialist Web Site of betraying its socialist and anti-imperialist principles because it champions working class opposition to Iran’s bourgeois-clerical regime. Based on an examination of Iran’s history and the global struggle against imperialism, the pamphlet demonstrates that a viable strategy to defeat imperialism can only be founded on the working class, and requires its mobilization as an independent political force in opposition to all factions of the bourgeoisie.

It reviews the Iranian working class’ long socialist-secular traditions and explains how the betrayals of the Stalinist Tudeh Party created conditions where the Iranian bourgeoisie, through a faction of the Muslim clergy espousing Shia populism, was able to politically derail the revolutionary upsurge that toppled the Shah’s brutal US-backed regime in 1979. It also examines the subsequent evolution of the Islamic Republic, refuting the claims of Mazaheri and others that Tehran is pursuing an “anti-imperialist” policy.

Keith Jones, the author of The Struggle against Imperialism and For Workers’ Power in Iran, is a member of the WSWS International Editorial Board.
