“The Democratic Party has on its hands the blood of millions of people who have been killed by American imperialism”

Eric London interviewed by Ryan Knight on Amped Up podcast

In an interview with Ryan Knight, WSWS writer Eric London spoke on the role played by the Democratic Party in promoting figures like Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, as well as on the strategic need for socialists to study the historic experiences of the working class on a world scale.

During the interview, London explained:

The Democratic Party is not an institution which can be separated from capitalism, it cannot be separated from the American state. It is a party of the CIA, it is a party of the FBI, of the prison system, it is a party which has on its hands the blood of millions of people who have been killed by American imperialism in every corner of the world for over 100 years. It is a party that is run by the corporations and it is a party which has a special history, its role is to block the growth of social opposition. Over the course of two centuries of American capitalism, the Democratic Party is there to institutionalize left-wing opposition—that is to bring it within the framework of the two party system in order to preserve the two party system—and to block the development of an independent party of the working class.
