Attend the IYSSE (Australia) AGM at Brisbane's Griffith University against war and the assault on democratic rights

The International Youth and Students for Social Equality (IYSSE) is holding its Annual General Meeting (AGM) at Griffith University in Queensland’s state capital Brisbane. The AGM will be held online via Zoom. The details are:

Time: 1:00 p.m. (AEST), Wednesday 24 August

We urge all Griffith students to attend the AGM so that the only anti-war and genuinely socialist revolutionary club can be affiliated on campus.

After the formal business of the AGM, the IYSSE will hold a discussion on the US-led drive to world war and the defence of WikiLeaks journalist Julian Assange.

Nearly six months after the US proxy war against Russia in Ukraine began, the Biden administration is seeking to provoke China into a military conflict over Taiwan. US imperialism is desperate to maintain its global hegemony by challenging what it views as its main economic and military threats: China and Russia.

While the US government and its allies in Australia and NATO claim to be crusaders for democracy in Ukraine and Taiwan, they trample on the democratic rights of Julian Assange, a courageous journalist who exposed American war crimes in Iraq and Afghanistan and faces a life sentence in a US prison as a result.

In Australia, recent revelations have shown that former Prime Minister Scott Morrison from March 2020 secretly took joint control of at least five key ministries, aggregating power to himself over health, government finances, industry and the police and intelligence apparatus.

What has been revealed, however, is not simply Morrison’s personal proclivities, but how quickly the political establishment in Australia resorted to extra-parliamentary and authoritarian forms of rule. As is taking place internationally, the ruling class fears an explosion of working-class opposition from below.

While the ruling elite threaten to plunge humanity into a devastating nuclear conflict, youth and workers around the world are being forced to endure worsening living conditions. The rising cost of living and mass deaths through the murderous “let it rip” policies of governments the world over amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic are driving workers into direct opposition to the barbaric capitalist system.

All the issues that confront humanity today—war, social inequality, dictatorship, surging prices, the pandemic, and climate change—are fundamentally caused by capitalism, a system which subordinates every aspect of society to the profit interests of big business.

Capitalism is in its greatest crisis since World War II. The COVID-19 pandemic is a trigger event, exacerbating all the underlying contradictions of capitalism. But while the ruling elites worldwide are turning towards war preparations and dictatorial rule, the working class and youth are moving to the left.

The IYSSE is fighting to build an international revolutionary movement of workers, students, and youth to end capitalism, which offers nothing but catastrophe. We encourage students and youth to participate in this important meeting and take up the fight against imperialist war and for a socialist future.

As part of this fight, the IYSSE is holding Annual General Meetings at a number of universities across the country to ensure that a genuine socialist revolutionary and anti-war club is present on university campuses. Upcoming AGMs are listed below.
