On the eve of Brazil’s elections

Socialist Equality Group to hold online event “The Crisis of Democracy in Brazil and the Perspective of Socialist Revolution”

On Saturday, at 3pm (GMT-3) [2pm New York, 7pm London, 8pm Paris], the Socialist Equality Group (GSI), Brazilian supporters of the International Committee of the Fourth International (ICFI), will present the online event “The Crisis of Democracy in Brazil and the Perspective of Socialist Revolution.”

The event will be held on the eve of the first round of the presidential elections in Brazil, which mark the highest point of the crisis of the bourgeois political system in the country in the last four decades.

As the fascistic president Jair Bolsonaro openly promotes a conspiracy to challenge the results of the vote and install a presidential dictatorship, the military has been elevated to political arbiters of the nation, and the appointment of the next president will await a parallel vote count by the Armed Forces.

The fragile Brazilian democratic regime established in 1985-88 has, in any meaningful sense, been annihilated.

The rapidly maturing crisis in Brazil can only develop in one of two opposite directions: the consolidation of a fascist dictatorship by the ruling class, which will deepen exploitation and social misery, or the seizure of political power by the working class as part of the world socialist revolution.

The event organized by GSI will present an analysis of the historical and international roots of the Brazilian political situation, establishing its essential relationship to the crisis of global capitalism.

The dictatorial threats in Brazil stem from the same crisis conditions driving the imperialist bourgeoisie’s turn to a new catastrophic world war, the global elites’ homicidal response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the explosion of social inequality, and the resurgence of fascist movements around the world.

The GSI will make every effort to alert the working class to the grave risks contained in the present situation, which are being systematically covered up by the bankrupt bourgeois opposition of the Workers Party (PT) and its pseudo-left allies, such as the Socialism and Freedom Party (PSOL).

But the fundamental objective of the GSI is the mobilization of the working class as an independent political force. This is the only progressive response to the capitalist crisis and its threats of fascist dictatorship and nuclear annihilation.

The profound social, political and economic dislocations that mark our current convulsive period are provoking an unprecedented global movement of the working class. Amidst the resurgence of strikes and mass demonstrations against social inequality and the bankrupt capitalist regimes, the working class is beginning a political shift toward socialism.

We urge all readers to participate in the event “The Crisis of Democracy in Brazil and the Prospect of Socialist Revolution” and join the GSI in the struggle for the conscious preparation of the revolutionary socialist movement in Brazil.
