David Walsh, the Arts Editor of the World Socialist Web Site, will be speaking at the June 13 meeting of the Socialist Equality Party, “Hands off the DIA!: The defense of culture and the crisis in Detroit.” Walsh will speak along with the SEP’s candidate for mayor of Detroit, D’Artagnan Collier.
Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr has issued repeated threats to sell off the artwork of the Detroit Institute of Arts to pay off the city’s bondholders. When Orr meets with Detroit’s creditors this week, the main topic of discussion will be what assets of Detroit must be sold off as part of a broader attack on the working class of the entire city.
The meeting will discuss the historical roots of the attack on culture and a political strategy for the working class.
