David North sends a message to Sri Lankan SEP members attacked by pro-government thugs

David North, chairman of the International Editorial Board of the World Socialist Web Site and the Socialist Equality Party (SEP) in the US has sent the following note to Dehin Wasantha and Lakshman Fernando, SEP members in Sri Lanka who were brutally attacked by two pro-government thugs while part of an SEP campaign team outside the University of Moratuwa on November 30.

Indika Perera and Suranga Piyawardena, the president and secretary of the Podujana Pragathishili Save Sangamaya (PPSS), which is affiliated to the ruling Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, violently attacked Dehin and Fernando, causing severe injuries. The SEP has launched a campaign calling upon workers, youth and students in Sri Lanka and internationally to defend its democratic rights to engage in political activities.

Dear Comrades Dehin Wasantha and Lakshman Fernando:

The membership of the International Committee of the Fourth International is outraged by the violent attack upon you by the right-wing PPSS.

The cowardly thugs—trade union bureaucrats who serve as the hirelings of the capitalist regime—stupidly believe that they can intimidate our party with such reactionary tactics. In fact, they draw upon themselves the contempt of the working class.

Comrade Joe Kishore will soon have the opportunity to personally convey to you the solidarity of your international comrades and their best wishes for your speedy recovery from the injuries that you sustained.

With revolutionary greetings,

David North
